Answer: Pikes Peak, located in the Rocky Mountains, is one of the most famous summits in the United States. The mountain is named in honor of American explorer Zebulon Pike who was unable to reach the summit. In July 1893, Katharine Lee Bates wrote the words to “America the Beautiful”, after having admired the view from the top of Pikes Peak. On the pinnacle of the mountain, the words of the poem started to come to her, and she wrote them down immedietly. A plaque commemorating the words to the song is placed at the summit.
